The Details

The earrings are cast in bronze with Sterling silver hooks. Dimensions: Each mask size: 2.2cm (w) x 4.5cm (h).They celebrate the phenomenal Iyoba Idia from the Kingdom of Benin during the 16th century (now in modern day Nigeria).

The Story

Bold pieces.  Bold statement. These earrings are a contemporary interpretation of one of the most recognised African Art-works- the Iyoba Idia ivory pendent mask. The original mask, most likely created in the 16th century, destroyed the myth that African art was primitive. The mask sent a clear message: that African art was as sophisticated or even more so, than European art.

Iyoba Idia - warrior, politician, spiritual leader, adept politician, and protector of the Edo people. She was also known as the "The Hidden Oba" and remains a giant of true leadership. For more information see:
